Broken Brushes

Berlin, Germany

November 8 - 23, 2013

In the collection shown in the architectural building of the university are 79 prints, created by well-known German artists, artists or painters who spent an important creative period in Germany. They include Max Beckmann, Lovis Corinth, Otto Dix, Lyonel Feininger, George Grosz, Johannes Itten, Wassily Kandinsky, Ernst Kirchner, Paul Klee, Oskar Kokoschka, Käthe Kollwitz, Franz Marc, Edvard Munch, Emil Nolde and Gabriele Munter. The art of those artists was considered under the Nazi regime as "degenerate". The artists themselves were persecuted and forced to emigrate in many cases.

The timing of the opening of the exhibition was scheduled on the eve of the commemoration of the Kristallnacht deliberately.   The exhibition is a reminder of the generation of outcast artists during the Nazi regime, displaying in their art human suffering and the search for an ideal world often mixed with humor and sarcasm.

The prints belong to Gustav Kopriva , art collector and gallery owner  from Houston, Texas purchased from American private collections and mostly art auctions. Kopriva's art collection has been displayed in many galleries at American universities, now coming to Berlin at the Technical University of Berlin. The curator is Dr. Angelika Jansen, San Antonio, Texas and Berlin.

The exhibition is supported by the Embassy of the United States of America and sponsored by Redbud Gallery (Houston, TX), the Foundation for Art House Salzwedel, of Dietrich of pits, Gornig GmbH & Co. and Arts  Convergence (Austin, TX).

From Berlin, the exhibition will go to Art House of Art Foundation Salzwedel.
