Emily Mitchell (Texas)
October 9 - October 31, 2010
Starving Art is a series of portrait drawings made by Mitchell portraying people sinking their teeth into food or drink (thus, no longer starving). The portraits are mixed media works on paper in which ink, charcoal, and pastel are used to create layers of lines, splashes, and shades that together create Emily's distinct style. The piece pictured here is entitled Corny, and depicts the subject eating a corn dog. Her main body of work is called Liminal-ism, (the study of things in transtion) and is comprised of large mixed media works on paper of models brushing their teeth. Emily sees eating food and brushing teeth as the clean and the dirty sides of her drawing thought process and modes of observation.
