Redbud Gallery is pleased to present the works of artist Isabelle Scurry Chapman, a Houston native.  Isabelle is inspired by the boldness of color and design the bird kingdom has to offer. The Texas terrain lends itself perfectly to her lovely renderings of the winged creatures. The crimson head of the Northern Cardinal or the deep emerald of the Green Heron are only some of the bold shades one will relish in Isabelle’s small works.  Nature also gives way to eye-catching designs as found in the Golden-Fronted Woodpecker. She has a way of capturing feathered wildlife in a whimsical way that makes us appreciate its richness and diversity and wander our own backyard with curious eyes.  Isabelle’s radiant work mingles effortlessly on book covers or cigar boxes that provide a perfect backdrop and complement each other.

Artist Statement:

I paint birds because they are amazing.  They do magical, creative, strange things. The images I make are not realistic, but they are recognizable in a lyrical and idiosyncratic manner.  I begin my images with small surfaces such as cigar boxes and book covers because there is a story in them. My process is layering images that inspire me. Drawing, painting, and collaging form more layers. My work is small because small things are precious to me.

I care about birds. They are the harbingers of our environment and the first to react to its change.
