ARTIST STATEMENT
My journey as a ceramicist began in 2008, when I enrolled in a ceramic course at Lone Star College. Since then, I’ve evolved into a passionate ceramic artist, finding solace and inspiration in the tactile nature of clay.
The meditative process of working with clay allows me to lose myself in the present moment. Whether I’m hand‑building intricate sculptures or shaping functional pieces on the wheel, I let the clay guide me. Each piece becomes a canvas for my imagination, a testament to the interplay between form and texture.
Currently, my focus lies in sculptural work. I choose black mountain clay for its depth and character, high fired, to bring out its inherent richness. My sculptures pay homage to African people—individuals with unique stories etched into their features.
Each figure wears vibrant attire, adorned with ceramic jewelry, textured hairstyles or unique head wraps, all of which symbolize tradition, resilience, and cultural identity. As I sculpt their forms, I infuse them with personality and narrative. Through these sculptures, I aim to celebrate diversity, honor heritage, and evoke empathy.
As I move forward, my artistic pursuits lie in continuous exploration and experimentation. I plan to push the boundaries of my craft and delve deeper into the essence of clay. Whether it’s researching ancient firing methods or embracing contemporary influences, I am committed to evolving as a ceramicist.
BIOGRAPHY
Pat Edwards is a self-taught, Houston-based ceramic artist specializing in large-scale figurative forms, hand-built using high-fired Black Mountain clay as her preferred medium. Born in Ohio and a resident of Houston since 1982, her passion for three-dimensional form began in childhood and was rekindled during ceramic studies at Lone Star College in 2008. Edwards’ work centers on human character, dignity, and storytelling, giving physical life and presence to individual narrative in clay.
Edwards is widely recognized for her evocative ongoing series, African Figures: Expressions in Clay which highlights her philosophy of identity and heritage. Offering expressive character studies that capture individual presence and emotional resonance, the sculptures are rendered with detailed facial features, intricate hairstyles, bright artistic garb, ceramic jewelry, cowrie shells, and detailed canes. Each piece carries a distinct personality, story, and presence through carefully balanced textures and muted tones, engaging viewers in a direct dialogue on human expression and heritage.
Edwards creates her work within the studio environment at Lone Star College and continues to expand her sculptural practice through research, experimentation, and community engagement. She is currently preparing for her debut solo exhibition at Redbud Arts Center in Houston, Texas.
