RICHMOND AVE PUBLIC ART PROJECT

St. George Place Redevelopment Authority

Part of the St. George Place Redevelopment Authority’s (SGPRA) mission is to rebuild and enhance critical infrastructure within the Redevelopment Zone. This art installation is the start of a program along Richmond Avenue that will continue all the way to Hillcroft Street. By acknowledging the role of art and culture as economic development drivers the 25,000+ people driving Richmond Avenue every day will be able to enjoy a rotating “museum in the medians” showcasing local, contemporary art. In these unusual and challenging times, this seems especially timely and fitting.

CURATOR STATEMENT

Last year, we were excited to be invited by the St. George Place Redevelopment Authority to participate in the ongoing esplanade improvement efforts on Richmond Ave. Based on the successful citywide temporary sculpture exhibitions in the last six years, we invited three local Texas professional artists to create and erect art in a short timeline. Tara Conley, Tim Glover, and Mark Bradford are nationally known and have a reputation in providing sculptures in a timely manner.

The whimsical pieces of art contribute to the cohesion and wellbeing of this growing urban uptown community.  Civic pride and confidence are fostered and quality of life is improved. Art adds economic value to the area by increasing tourism. We hope additional sculptural pieces will be added to the area in the future.
