JUROR STATEMENT
Paul Klee said, “One eye sees, the other feels.”
Deciding which works I would select out of a total of 515 was a challenging journey. But it’s a journey I enjoyed taking. Seeing a myriad of works in different styles, techniques, and subject matter left me with great appreciation for you – the artists.
Being a juror is always a humbling experience and without a doubt, an honor. Thank you, VAA, for trusting me with this task.
My background as a curator, educator, and photographer paved my road into the decision-making process. It is indeed a process with lots of run-throughs, sorting, omitting, including, reshuffling.
I look for visual impact with my seeing eye, and for perspectives of viewpoints with my feeling eye, while staying open-minded toward unusual approaches. For these reasons, I selected a variety of styles from the submitted works. It is not easy to do so while viewing works online and I am looking forward to seeing the ones I selected in person. At the time of writing this statement, I have not selected the winners and honorable mention as I want to see the works up close and in person.
My hope is that the visitor to the resulting exhibition will feel the multidimensional facets of works of art that evoke seeing with one eye, feeling with the other and eliciting thoughts and ideas.
I congratulate the artists chosen and encourage the ones who were not chosen at this time, to continue pursuing your passion. Art enhances our understanding of the world, stimulates our imagination, and brings joy and beauty into our lives.
